Entry 38: When In Spain

Lamborghini Gallardo. Most people probably pronounce it something like ga-lard-do, but did you know that the actual pronunciation is guy-yard-do? So Akon was wrong, and so are many other wannabes.

Lamborghini, although an Italian automobile company, named the car after a breed of fighting bull. And as far as I know, I recall bull-fights to be more common in Spain than in Italy.

And secondly, the Spanish word gallardo means "gallant". In Spanish, the double l is pronounce as a y, hence guy-yard-do.

A couple other mispronunciations which get on my nerves:

1) Michael Crichton. His last name rhymes with "frighten".

2) Chuck Palahniuk. Pronounced "Paula Nick".

Nothing much to update, life's good.
